MINUTES

 

Present:  John Adams, President; Lisa Clawson, Vice-President; Sean Burcham, Secretary; Tyce Stebbins, Member; Norb Heban, Member; Darin Gullion, Assistant Superintendent; and Steven R. Hall, Superintendent

 

I.                   CALL TO ORDER

 

At 6:30 p.m. Board President, John Adams, called the meeting to order.

 

II.                PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

 

III.             AMEND AGENDA

 

A.     A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Norb Heban to amend the agenda as presented.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

IV.              MINUTES

 

A.     A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Lisa Clawson to accept the minutes of the business meeting, work session and executive session held on Tuesday, August 18, 2009.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

V.                 FINANCE

 

A.     A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Norb Heban to accept the list of vouchers as presented.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

B.     Purchase over $7,500

 

A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Sean Burcham to approve the following purchases over $7,500, Carter Lumber for $16,410.72 and HPS for $7,992.00, as presented by Superintendent Hall:

VIII.        NEW BUSINESS

 

A.     Certified Staff

 

1.       A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by Sean Burcham to employ Ashley Sprague as a classroom teacher at Albany Elementary School effective August 21, 2009 school year pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

2.      A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Lisa Clawson to employ ISTEP+ remediation teachers at Delta High School as follows effective September 1-14, 2009:

Julie Blakely

Joey Gossett

Scott Herring

Steve Scroggins

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

B.     Classified Staff

 

1.       The Board was informed of the resignation of Morgan Jones as the CAPE Coordinator for Eaton and Albany Elementary Schools effective with the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.

 

A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Lisa Clawson to employ a Title I instructional assistant and employ and train a substitute bus driver (items #2 and 3 below) as presented by Superintendent Hall:

 

2.      Employ Ronda Kimbrough as a Title I instructional assistant at Albany Elementary School effective August 21, 2009 for the 2009-2010 school year pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

3.      Employ and train Sarah Thompson as a substitute bus driver effective with the 2009-2010 school year.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

C.     Extra Curricular

 

A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Lisa Clawson to appoint the following extra curricular positions as presented by Superintendent Hall:

 

1.       Appoint Jennifer Olfier as a co-sponsor for the National Junior Honor Society at Delta Middle School effective with the 2009-2010 school year.

 

2.      Appoint Andrew Lewman as a freshman boys basketball coach at Delta High School for the 2009-2010 season pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

 

3.      Appoint Ryan Conwell as a volunteer assistant boys soccer coach at Delta High School for the 2009-2010 season pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

D.    Conference Requests/Field Trips

 

A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Norb Heban to approve the following conference requests and field trips (#2 through 13) as presented by Superintendent Hall:

 

1.       TEAMS Facilitator Training – Request withdrawn

 

2.      Julie Brown and Josh Landis requests permission to attend the UNITE Meetings (Updates on State Reports and PowerSchool) on Fridays, September 4 and December 4, 2009 and February 5 and May 7, 2010 at East Middle School in Brownsburg, IN.

 

3.      Jennifer Orchard requests permission to attend the Assistive Tech Team on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Storer Elementary School in Muncie, IN.

 

4.      Dee Orick and Karen Starks request permission to attend the Combi Oven Demonstration on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at the HGA Café in Indianapolis, IN

 

5.      Laurie Neal requests permission to attend the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing on Monday and Tuesday, September 14-15, 2009 at the Fishers Conference Center in Indianapolis, IN.

 

6.      Jeremy Neckers requests permission to attend the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing on Monday and Tuesday, September 14-15, 2009 at the Fishers Conference Center in Indianapolis, IN.

 

7.      Deborah Christopher requests permission to attend the Purdue Conference on Indiana P-12 Energy Education on Friday, September 18, 2009 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.

 

8.     Brian Lewis, Ashley Ernstberger, Deb Christopher, and John Kelly request permission to attend the Digitalis Starlab Training on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the East Central Educational Service Center in Connersville, IN.

 

9.      Connie Stinson and Doug Wilder request permission to attend the High School Guidance Counselor Financial Aid Workshop on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Ball State in Muncie, IN.

 

10.  All 4-5 Elementary Teachers request permission to attend the 6 + 1 Training (4th 8:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. and 5th 12:00 p.m. through 3:00 p.m.) on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Albany Elementary School in Albany, IN.

 

11.   All K-3 Elementary Teachers request permission to attend the 6 + 1 Training (K-1 8:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. and 2-3 12:00 p.m. through 3:00 p.m.) on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Albany Elementary School in Albany, IN.

 

12.  Jeri Harman requests permission to attend the Indiana Association for the Gifted Conference on Thursday and Friday, December 3-4, 2009 at the Downtown Marriott in Indianapolis, IN.

 

13.  Matt Lyons and Nancy Kunk request permission to take the Vocational Ag/Industrial Tech classes from Delta High School to the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland, IN from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2009.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

E.     Information and Proposals

 

1.             Superintendent

 

a.      Delta High School Facilities Update

 

Superintendent Hall presented updates to various work being completed at Delta High School.  Mr. Bales has completed work inside the building on areas damaged by water.  In addition the field turf for the football field is complete and the sound system was utilized at the last football game.

 

The new field and press box will be dedicated at a brief ceremony to be held at 6:45 p.m. on September 18, 2009, just prior to the start of the Delta vs. Yorktown football game.

 

 

2.            Assistant Superintendent

 

A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Sean Burcham to approve the following building usage, donation, and fund raising requests (a through m) as presented by Assistant Superintendent Gullion:

 

a.      Barb Broyles requests permission for the Eden Church to use the library at Eaton Elementary School on Mondays from August 24, 2009 through the end of the 2009-2010 school year from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for tutoring.

 

b.      Danielle Meiring requests permission for the Cub Scouts to use the gym at Eaton Elementary School on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for registration.

 

c.       Megan Boots requests permission for the Boy Scouts of America to use the cafeteria at Albany Elementary School on Thursday, September 10, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a Cub Scout sign up night.

 

d.      Terry Summers requests permission for the Indiana North Stars Baseball Team to use the baseball field at Delta High School on September 12, 2009 for baseball tryouts.

 

e.      Melia Clawson requests permission for the Cheerleader Boosters to use both gyms at Delta Middle School on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to hold a Cheer Clinic Camp for fund raising.

 

f.        Tom Devine requests permission to use the pool at Delta High School to hold the Fall Learn-to-Swim program on Saturdays, September 19, 26 and October 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

 

g.      Request approval to accept a donation of $200.98 by the Royerton PTO toward the purchase of privacy shields for Royerton Elementary School.

 

h.      Lisa Clawson requests permission for the Delta Girls Soccer Boosters to hold a car wash at the Delta Queen on Saturday, August 29, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m.

 

i.        Grant Zgunda request permission for the National Honor Society to sell red wristbands to benefit Riley Hospital at Delta High School from September 14-18, 2009.

 

j.        Susan Richter requests permission to hold a raffle at Delta High School to help raise funds for the Patterson Family on September 21, 2009.

 

k.      Kelli Reagan requests permission for the Albany Elementary PTO to hold an Abby Candle fundraiser from September 14, 2009 through September 28, 2009.

 

l.        Tisha Stone requests permission for Delta Volleyball to hold a basket bingo fundraiser at Delta High School on October 19, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

 

m.   Susan Smith requests permission to hold a book fair at DeSoto Elementary School from April 19, 2010 through April 23, 2010.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

IX.              LETTERS/NOTES

 

A.     None

 

X.                 BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS

 

Tyce Stebbins – I have heard a lot of positive comments from patrons.  Most recently I was pleased to hear positive comments regarding an open house held at Eaton Elementary School and how well that went.  It sounds like everyone is doing a great job of getting school underway this year.  I would also like to welcome Ms. Sprague to Albany Elementary.

 

Norb Heban – I would like welcome Ms. Sprague as well.  I’d also like to say thank you Mr. Conley for bringing her to the Board meeting.  Welcome Mr. Walburn.  We appreciate you stepping up to help.

 

Sean Burcham – I would concur with my fellow Board members.  Mr. Walburn, it is nice to see you.  Thank you all for coming this evening.  I’ve heard many good comments as the year gets underway.

 

Lisa Clawson – I would concur with my fellow Board members.  Thank you all for coming.  Congratulations Ms. Sprague.

 

John Adams – I would concur with my fellow Board members.  Congratulations Ms. Sprague.  I appreciate all the hard work from everyone and hearing good news from the community that tells me things are going well.  I appreciate the hard work by our administrative staff as well.

 

XI.              FUTURE MEETINGS

 

A.     The next regular meeting of the Board of School Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.

 

B.     There will be a special meeting of the Board of School Trustees for the purpose of having a 2010 budget hearing on September 22, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. at the Administration Building.

 

C.     The ISBA/IAPSS Fall Conference will be held on Monday and Tuesday, September 28-29, 2009 at the Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN.

 

XII.           ADJOURNMENT

 

A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Norb Heban and Board President, John Adams adjourned the meeting at 6:54 p.m.

 

An executive session on collective bargaining followed the Business Meeting.
