IV.              COMMUNITY MEETING

A.     Presentation of Options

Mr. Steve Murphy, school attorney, was the moderator for the evening.  Mr. Murphy informed the audience of the procedures to follow for the meeting.  He stated the meeting would be for comments and the Board appreciates all comments from the community.  If there are questions, they may be directed to himself or Mr. Hall and they will get an answer to them at a later time.  This is a comment session not a question and answer session.  He then introduced Mr. Steve Hall, Superintendent of Schools, for a presentation of the options.

Superintendent Hall began by stating the financial status of Delaware Community Schools has changed since the last community meeting.  Governor Daniels has announced an additional cut of 3% from the 2010-2011 budgets.  Superintendent Hall then reviewed the current options being considered by the Board.  He stated the Board continues to listen and take into account all options.

Community Comments

Mr. Steve Murphy, school attorney, introduced a time for comments from the audience.

Rose Marie Burchfield, Jen Southerland, Denise Thornburg, Marty McClain, Feather Brosio, Nick Davis, Neil and Sherri Greer, Jim Davis, Kent Sloniker, Tashia Weaver, Janet Grove, and Susan Whitehair spoke along with one audience member who only stated his first name.  The concerns expressed included the desire of keeping DeSoto Elementary open, the speed at which the decision is being made, leaving fifth grade students at the elementary schools because of overcrowding, sending the fifth grade students to the middle school, stifling of sixth grade students’ curriculum if they are put back into the self-contained classrooms, of having no referendum to vote on, and the bussing of the fifth grade students with middle and high school students.  There were also ideas from some of the speakers on different ways they felt the Corporation could save money.

V.                 ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

A.     Julie Brown requests permission for Delta Dollars for Scholars to conduct a raffle for three autographed basketballs from December 18, 2009 through February 19, 2010 during home basketball games at Delta High School and Delta Middle School.
