MINUTES

Present:  Harry Fowler, President; Norb Heban, Vice-President; John Adams, Secretary; Lisa Clawson, Member; Sean Burcham, Member; Steve Hall, Assistant Superintendent; Pat Mapes, Superintendent

 

I.                   CALL TO ORDER

 

At 6:30 p.m. Board President Harry Fowler called the meeting to order.

 

II.                PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

 

III.             AMEND AGENDA

 

A.     A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by John Adams to amend the agenda as presented.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

IV.              MINUTES

 

A.     A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Sean Burcham to amend the Tuesday, June 5, 2007 minutes to read as follows:

 

Extra Curricular #4:  Appoint Daniel Bergren as a volunteer assistant eighth grade volleyball coach at Delta Middle School effective for the 2007 season pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

B.     A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Lisa Clawson to approve the minutes of the work session, executive session and business meeting held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

V.                 FINANCE

 

A.     A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Sean Burcham to approve the list of vouchers as presented.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

VI.              OLD BUSINESS

 

A.     None

 

VII.           COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE FLOOR

 

Ms. Sheliah Dorton, DCCTA President, thanked everyone for such a good start to this school year.  She thanked the summer workers for a job well done in getting our schools ready to open for the year.

 

VIII.        NEW BUSINESS

 

A.     Certified Staff

 

1.       A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Norb Heban to employ the following elementary and high school teachers for ISTEP Test Prep positions for the fall of 2007:

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

2.      A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Lisa Clawson to employ Erica Pluimer as a math teacher at Delta High School effective for the 2007-2008 school year pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

B.     Classified Staff

 

1.       The Board was informed of the resignation of Jessica Baker as a CAPE coordinator position at Albany Elementary School effective immediately.

 

A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Sean Burcham to employ the following classified positions as recommended by Superintendent Mapes:

 

2.      Employ Trent Spangler as an instructional assistant at Albany Elementary School effective for the 2007-2008 school year pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

 

3.      Employ Susan DeLisle as an instructional assistant at Eaton Elementary School effective for the 2007-2008 school year pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

C.     Extra Curricular

 

1.       The Board was informed of the resignation of Sheila Piazza as the fine and related arts department head at Delta Middle School effective immediately.

 

2.      The Board was informed of the resignation of Tiffany Turner as a spell bowl sponsor at Eaton Elementary School effective immediately.

 

3.      The Board was informed of the resignation of Deborah Christopher as a spell bowl sponsor at Royerton Elementary School effective immediately.

 

4.      The Board was informed of the resignation of David Reade as a head freshman basketball coach at Delta High School effective immediately.

 

A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Lisa Clawson to appoint the following Extra Curricular positions as recommended by Superintendent Mapes:

 

5.      Appoint David Reade as an assistant freshman basketball coach at Delta High School effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

6.      Appoint Kendra Clements as a spell bowl coach for Royerton Elementary School effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

7.      Appoint John Kelley as a math bowl coach for Royerton Elementary School effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

8.     Appoint Erica Pluimer as a freshman class sponsor for Delta High School effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

9.      Appoint Linda Burt and Melanie Marshall as junior class sponsors for Delta High School effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

10.  Appoint Virginia Kleeburg as a choir director for Delta High School effective for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

11.   Appoint Danielle McCall as a cheerleading coach for Delta Middle School effective for the 2007-2008 school year pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

D.    Conference Requests/Field Trips

 

1.       A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Sean Burcham to approve the request by Linda Case, Melba Fox, and Lourdes Davis to take various Delta High School students who have taken at least three years of Spanish classes to Mexico City, Merida and Isla Mujeres beginning on Thursday or Friday, March 20 or 21, 2008 for eight to nine days.  The Board reserves the right to cancel the trip should the international climate be unsafe.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Lisa Clawson to approve the following meeting requests as presented by Superintendent Mapes:

 

2.      Don Harman, Frida Cannon and Sheliah Piazza request permission to attend the INSAI Steering Team Meeting on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at the Holiday Inn in Indianapolis, IN.

 

3.      Joe Schmaltz requests permission for his building administrators and counselors to attend the ISTEP and Fall Workshop on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at the Winchester High School in Winchester, IN.

 

4.      Carly Carter and Becky Watters request permission to attend the Initiative Training at Camp Adventure on Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Camp Adventure in Muncie, IN.

 

5.      Susie Haggard requests permission to attend the Ropes Training at Camp Adventure on Wednesday through Thursday, August 22-23, 2007 at Camp Adventure in Muncie, IN.

 

6.      Jennifer Winkhart requests permission to attend the Initiative Training at Camp Adventure on Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Camp Adventure in Muncie, IN.

 

7.      John Kelly, Maryann Foltz, and Ashley Ernstberger request permission to attend the StarLab Educator Training on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at the East Central Service Center in Connersville, IN.

 

8.     Julie Brown and Josh Landis request permission to attend the Indiana UNITE Meeting on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Brownsburg East Middle School in Brownsburg, IN.

 

9.      Don Harman requests permission to attend the IASP Board of Directors Meeting on the following dates:  Friday, September 7, 2007; Friday, December 7, 2007; Friday, April 25, 2007; and Thursday through Friday, June 5-6, 2008.  The meetings will be held at the IASP Office in Indianapolis, IN.

 

10.  Kelly Alles requests permission to attend the Picture Exchange Communication System Training Workshop on Thursday through Friday, September 20-21, 2007 at Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

 

11.   Chrys Phillips and Dee Orick request permission to attend the GFS Food Show on Tuesday through Wednesday, October 2-3, 2007 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

 

12.  Margaret Allen, Byron Banta, Susan DeNeal, and Doug Hazelrigg request permission to attend the Jr./Sr. Academic Coaches Conference on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN.

 

13.  Kathy Hottinger, Gina Taylor and Kim DeVoss request permission to attend the Rules 2002 Mentor Teachers on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the East Central Service Center in Connersville, IN.

 

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

E.     Information and Proposals

 

1.             Superintendent

 

a.      Title I Distinguished School Award Eligibility

 

Superintendent Mapes informed the Board Eaton Elementary School has been selected as an eligible school to receive a Title I Distinguished School Award.  Superintendent Mapes congratulated Mrs. Hottinger, Principal of Eaton Elementary, for this honor for the school.

 

b.      Opening of School

 

Superintendent Mapes reported to the Board schools have had a very good opening week.  Preliminary enrollment numbers appear to show a decrease of around 32 students from last year.  September 14, 2007 is the official count day for schools.

 

2.            Assistant Superintendent

 

a.      A motion was made by Sean Burcham and seconded by Norb Heban to approve the request to donate eight (8) VCR/DVD players to Eaton Elementary School by the Eaton Alumni Association.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

b.      Early Intervention Grant

 

Assistant Superintendent Hall informed the Board our elementary schools were awarded an Indiana Early Intervention Grant.  This is our second year to receive this grant.  It is unusual to be awarded the Early Intervention Grant two years in a row.

 

c.       Family Swim Events

 

Assistant Superintendent Hall informed the Board of the following dates and times for family swim nights at Delta High School:

 

Monday, October 15, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, December 8, 2007 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Saturday, January 5, 2007 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Monday, January 14, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 16, 2008 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

 

A motion was made by Norb Heban and seconded by Lisa Clawson to approve the family swim nights at Delta High School for the 2007-2008 school year along with the cost of lifeguards for these events.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

3.            Director of Maintenance

 

a.      Director of Maintenance, Barry Harris, thanked all the maintenance staff for their hard work in making the opening of school go so well this year.

 

Superintendent Mapes updated the Board on the progress of Phase II of the Delta High School Project.  The project should have been completed before the opening of school.  We hope to get resolution on some of the problem areas soon.

 

4.            Director of Transportation

 

a.      Transportation Update

 

Director of Transportation, Kim Kemper, informed the Board our school bus drivers did a great job of working through the first days of school with our new routing system.  It was a good start to the year even though the first couple of days were confusing.  Superintendent Mapes informed the Board the Director of Transportation will bring them an updated report on the new system after a couple months of use.

X.                 BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS

 

Lisa Clawson – I would like to thank everyone for coming tonight.  Congratulations to Susan DeLisle on her employment.  Congratulations as well to Mrs. Hottinger on being a contender for the Title I award and to Mr. Hall for the Grant award.  Thanks to everyone for a good start to school.

 

John Adams – Congratulations to Susan Delisle on her employment and to Mrs. Hottinger for the Title I recognition, also to Mr. Hall for the Grant received.  Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to get school off to a good start this year.  I wish all our fall sports well in their endeavors this season.

 

Norb Heban – That was a very nice article in the Star Press about Mr. Pat Mapes.  Congratulations to Eaton Elementary as well.  It was nice to open school so well this year.

 

Sean Burcham – I would concur with my fellow Board members.  Good job to start the year off well.  Let’s keep it up.

 

Harry Fowler – I would like to welcome Susan Delisle to the Corporation.  Kathy Hottinger, thank you for all your work.  Sheliah Dorton, thank you as well for a great start to the school year.  Let’s keep the good momentum going.

 

XI.              FUTURE MEETINGS

 

A.     The next meeting of the Board of School Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.

 

B.     The ISBA/IAPSS Fall Conference will be held at the Indiana Convention Center/RCA Dome on Sunday through Tuesday, Sept. 30-October 2, 2007.

 

XII.           ADJOURNMENT

 

A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Lisa Clawson and Board President, Harry Fowler adjourned the meeting at 7:15 p.m.
