As
fifth grade teachers, we would like to welcome all future fifth
grade students to our classes. It is our goal to prepare your
children for sixth grade at Delta Middle School. What follows is a
brief overview of our expectations with respect to curriculum and
study habits.
Math
We have developed a math program that focuses on helping
students make sense of mathematics in meaningful ways. Number
sense is the driving force of our program. It is imperative that
our children have mastered the basic facts of addition,
subtraction. multiplication, and division, by the time they become
fifth graders. To help master these facts, students will complete
Rocket Math each day. We believe that students who develop strong number
sense will become more proficient with computation and more
powerful as problem solvers.
Spelling
Spelling grades will be based on spelling tests, spelling
activities, dictation, and spelling on written homework
assignments.
Reading
Reading instruction will encompass the following areas: Skill
instruction, vocabulary development, and comprehension. Students
will be required to accumulate a minimum of fourteen AR points per
nine week grading period.
Students will also be required to read independently each day.
Social Studies-Science/Health
These areas will be taught in units on a lecture, discussion
basis, and hand on experiments. Most work will be done at school,
although isolated reading assignments, study of notes, and
preparation for tests must be done at home. In addition, all
fifth grade students will be required to complete a science fair
project.
Language
Usage, study skills, and composition will be taught. A variety
of writing activities, such as writing to contests and Young
Authors will be used
to develop your child's writing skills. The 6 + 1 Writing
Traits is used to develop student writing.
Our curriculum is supplemented each year by a variety of
special events such as field trips and convocations. Our three day
trip to Tecumseh, every other year, has been an outstanding trip.
We hope to continue it in the future.
