First Grade

Albany Elementary offers two sections of first grade. These classes are taught by Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Gibson & Mr. Huber.

Philosophy

The first grade classrooms at Albany Elementary School are active and enriching classrooms.  Many thematic units are taught throughout the year with a wide variety of learning experiences provided while targeting the Indiana First Grade Standards.

Reading – Language – Writing – Spelling

Reading is taught using our reading series and 4-Block Reading.  4-Block Reading is a method that builds on reading skills.  Making Words is a block where phonics and spelling are taught.  Guided Reading concentrates on comprehension, oral reading and fluency.  Self-Selected Reading has students reading trade books from different book baskets that offer books of different levels and interests.

In Writing we have added the Six Trait Plus One writing program.  We are focusing on doing much more writing and editing in first grade.  We also tie in books we read and observe the traits that authors use in writing.

Math

Math is taught with opportunities to understand numbers and how to connect numbers to build concepts.  First graders are introduced to many math skills that they will use throughout their school careers.  They start to build a foundation of basic math skills and the ability to problem solve.

Science – Health - Social Studies

Science, Health and Social Studies are introduced and taught with books, hands-on techniques and themes.  We take related field trips with our students to enhance their learning.  These field trips include trips to the Muncie Children’s Museum, Minnetrista Cultural Center, a tour of the Albany community and its services and the Hults’ Environmental Learning Center.

The great working relationship between the two first grade teachers as well as with the entire support staff create a positive learning environment.  Our children have contact with many caring adults who help with their education.  Programs like CAPE, the Waterford Computer Program and Accelerated Reading help the individual child.  Our technology programs help students learn computer skills while also allowing parents to monitor their progress through Power Grade.
