Second Grade

Second grade presents the challenge of becoming more independent. Academic, social, and emotional areas will be developed this year. We hope that good writing habits will be learned this year.

The following subjects with a brief description are taught in second grade.

Reading

Whole group, small group, and individual instruction will be used to teach reading and language arts.  Guided reading, phonics, writing, and independent reading are the building blocks for developing the reading skills.  The student will be expected to participate in the Accelerated Reading Program each week.

Language

Language skills will be taught. We will emphasize such things as complete sentences, capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech. Following directions and basic writing skills will be practiced.

Writing

Manuscript writing (printing) will be used the first semester. The second semester cursive writing will be taught. Students should be able to write and read words in cursive by the end of the school year.

Math

Basic addition and subtraction facts through 18 are memorized this year. We will be doing addition and subtraction problems with three digits and regrouping by the end of the year. We will also cover story problems, time, measurement, and money.

Science

The areas of life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, and healthful living are studied. Activities such as Star Lab are used to support the lessons.

Social Studies

We learn about our community, groups within the community, and the importance of working together. Understanding the development of our country, the people of the world, and the responsibilities of a good citizen are also studied.

Spelling

Each week we will have an individualized spelling list.  Each week's list will study certain spelling or phonic rule.  The student will be given a pretest on Monday and then assigned words for the week.  The test with dictation sentences will be on Friday.
