Third
Grade

Mrs. Shaw's Class
Third
grade is an exciting year for students. We have many expectations
for them, not only academically, but socially as well. We hope to
achieve these expectations by stressing good study habits, good
citizenship, by participating in many projects, and by taking
enriching and worthwhile field trips.
The following is a brief over view of subjects covered in third
grade.
English
This area covers written expression, language usage (including
the recognition of and use of parts of speech), capitalization,
punctuation, and sentence parts.
Math
Among the concepts and skills studied are money; telling time;
reading and writing 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 digit numerals; writing and
saying the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
facts in timed situations; place value; measuring; rounding
numbers to the nearest ten and hundred; graphing; fractions; and
mental math activities.
Reading
Students are placed in an appropriate reading group. The
reading grade reflects oral reading performance, comprehension
level, ability to decode words, and test performance.
Science
The science curriculum includes the study of life, physical,
and earth sciences. Each area is enhanced with activities and
experiments appreciate for that topic.
Social Studies
Students study the many different facets of a community. One
kind of community studied is the farming community. This study is
enriched with a day long field trip on the farm. We also enhance
our community study with an eight week Great State Caper project.
Spelling
Students weekly tests are on Wednesdays and Fridays. If the
test is passed on Wednesday, they need not take the test on
Friday. Shortened weeks might alter the schedule somewhat. Daily
grades will be a part of each grading periods grades.
Writing
Cursive writing will be required. Good handwriting habits,
correct formation of letters and joining of letters, and neatness
will be continuously encouraged.
