Music Opportunities at DeSoto Elementary

Music Class:

Students in grades 1-5 have music class two times per week for 30 minutes.  Kindergarten students have music class one time per week for 30 minutes.

Musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm, form of musical pieces, and dynamics, to name a few, are learned through movement, creating, listening, instrument, and singing activities.  Starting in kindergarten, students begin learning the basic concepts of pitch and rhythm.  Students in upper grades use rhythm and pitch to compose and create their own songs.

Music is a unique field that allows students to combine their knowledge in math, language, history, and the arts along with their creativity to gain an appreciation for many aspects of music.

Opportunities in Music Outside of Music Class:

1.  DeSoto Elementary Choir: DeSoto Elementary offers an extra-curricular choir open to all 4th and 5th grade students which meets after school on Tuesdays until 3:15.  The choir typically has around five performances per year.

2.  Circle the State With Song (CSWS):  CSWS is an event sponsored by the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) each year.  This is a neat opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to study and prepare choral literature which is selected by IMEA and perform it on a Sunday in February with other students from East Central Indiana.  Students must audition for this group.

3.  F.A.M.E.: The Foundation for Arts and Music in Elementary Education presents a festival each year.  DeSoto Elementary music and art departments both participate in this festival.  The DeSoto choir sings and students submit artwork for an art exhibit.
