Physical
Education
Students
in kindergarten through fifth grade participate in physical
education. The teacher does a lot of testing on the children
along with many different activities. Students in kindergarten
and first grade are tested on locomotor skills (skipping, hopping,
jumping, and galloping). Grades one through five are tested on
manipulative skills (catching, kicking, hitting, and throwing).
Students in grades one through five do the Presidential Physical
Fitness Testing. They are tested on pull-ups (arm
strength), sit-ups (abdominal strength), v-sit (flexibility), and
shuttle run (agility). Grade one runs 1/4 mile for time, grade
two runs 1/2 mile, and grades three-five run one mile (endurance).
Students get to have their names placed on the gym wall if they
can run their respected distance without walking, regardless of
their time.
They can also get their name on the wall if they can do all the
locomotor skills and manipulative skills correctly. the wall
is getting quite full.
The entire student population has been taught the Macarena Dance
and the Boot Scootin' Boogie.
The favorite activity the students participate in is field day at
the end of the school year. The kids get a chance to play all
day at more than 20 stations. There is no competition
involved. The kids play at their own level. The physical
education teacher enjoys watching the students have such a great
time.
