Combining the use of various sources of technology with sound teaching practices is necessary to provide the best possible instruction for students.  At DeSoto Elementary School, we strive to stay alert to new technology that can enhance instruction and provide students with the needed experiences to be successful in this rapidly changing society.

Staff members are given opportunities to continue to refine computer skills through workshops and conferences.  All classrooms also have student computer work stations which are utilized daily.  A twenty-six station computer lab is available to all grades, and teachers follow a regular schedule of utilizing the lab on a weekly basis.  Through the successful integration of using the computers in the classroom and laboratory settings, our educational programs are enhanced at every level.  Learning disabilities students use computers to help compensate for their individual weaknesses, and the more gifted students can be challenged further through the use of computers.

The entire DeSoto Elementary School building is networked and has full Internet service available for both students and staff.  A number of computer software programs have been purchased and site licenses have been acquired, including: Microsoft Office, Type to Learn,  Accelerated Reader, Power School, and Internet Explorer.  The school library is fully automated through an extensive technology project completed during the 2002-2003 school year.

A television monitor is located in each classroom, as well as other areas throughout the building.  Each classroom is also equipped with a TVator that enables the teacher to coordinate the use of the computer and the television monitor as an instructional tool.  Other technology such as a digital camera, camcorders, overhead projectors, laser disk players, and videocassette/DVD players are available in every classroom for teacher use.  A wide screen projection system was added during the 2001-2002 school year and provides the capability of making video and audio presentations in the gymnasium.

A television studio was installed at DeSoto during the 2001-2002 school year, which allows students to produce, direct, and deliver live broadcasts to the entire school.  Staff members supervise the organization and content of the daily broadcasts.  However, students are rotated on a weekly basis and have the main responsibility for the productions.

The Delaware Community School Corporation maintains a three-year technology plan that is developed and reviewed by a committee of students, parents, and educators within the school corporation.  DeSoto Elementary staff members also participate in building level decisions regarding technology as it relates to the school and instruction.

The expanded use of technology at DeSoto Elementary School will continue to be an area of focus.  Teachers continue to search for ways to integrate technology into the curriculum.  Students are taught the necessary skills to become successful in our ever-changing society.
