Highway 13

by Brock Logan

There was once a family from Texas traveling down the most barren, desolate road in southern Texas. Highway 13 was the name and it was rarely traveled ever since the super highway was put in to save thirty minutes of traveling.

The Johnson family was made up of a father, Tyler, the mother Katie, and their two daughters Ashley and Lilly. Ashley and Lilly were identical twins at the age of seventeen. They had been begging their father to take them to Mexico for vacation because it was only four short hours to the border.

They were two and half hours into the trip when they began to get hungry but there was no where to stop in sight.

Ten minutes later they car began to stall, Tyler looked at the gas gauge and it appeared that they had a half of a tank remaining. But the more he thought about it he realized that it had said that for the past hour.

They got out and looked around, nothing in sight. Katie got her cell phone out but there was no signal. She stood up on top of the car to try and get a signal and when she did her phone shut off for no reason. She tried to turn it on but it would not. She had an uneasy feeling in her stomach when Ashley informed her that the same thing happened to her phone.

Tyler knew it was getting dark and he began to tremble at the thought of having to stay all night in their vehicle. Especially on a road that he was honestly terrified of. He knew it was never traveled on and they may be stuck there for a while.

They waited for an hour but no one came along. Ashley and Lilly were getting more and more scared because they had heard all the scary stories about how highway 13 was supposed to be haunted.

About ten minutes later they could see a Semi coming down the road, they all jumped for joy. The horn on the Semi sounded, he honked and honked and they had no idea why. He was not slowing down so Tyler told everyone to get in the car. As Tyler was shutting his door the Semi hit his door and ripped it off and in the process it spun the car around. Ashley and Lilly was screaming and crying at the tops of their lungs.

The semi drove down the road a ways before stopping, turning around, and heading back towards the Johnson family car. Tyler tried and tried to start the car but there was not enough gas to get it to fire.

The semi was going slower this time and stopped abruptly in front of the car. They sat there for fifteen minutes waiting for the driver to get out but nothing happened. The truck had been shut off for ten minutes and nothing had happened since then.

They looked in the windshield but it was completely darked out. Tyler got out and walked up to the door. There was no one in the driver seat or at least it appeared. Tyler opened the door and hopped up into the truck; he looked in the back and saw nothing. He could not understand how the truck was moving with no driver. As he was looking trough the back of the cab he heard a screech that sent chills down his back. He knew it was Lilly.

He jumped out and saw a creepy, dark figure standing at the back passenger side door that had a handful of Lilly’s long blonde hair. He was now enraged and began to run towards the figure, he punched the Man and at that moment he let go of Lilly’s hair and turned his attention to Tyler.

Tyler quickly noticed that the man had no eyes and at that moment he realized he was not dealing with a human at all. He walked towards Tyler and fire came out of his eye sockets. Tyler began to back up quickly, but the Beast tackled Tyler to the ground and began to bite his forehead. The skin peeled off and Tyler screamed along with his wife and two daughters.

Blood poured out of his head and the screams quickly came to an end. Tyler was dead and his wife and kids were next. Katie was frozen with fear and Lilly and Ashley were hiding in the back seat.  Katie jumped into the car and locked the doors. The beast shook the car. HE had no way to get in so he set the car ablaze to try and force the horrified family out of the car. It worked and they were all screaming in pain and the tears sizzled and they poured down their face.

They legend was true, Highway 13 was haunted. No one ever seen and trace of the family. They car and their body’s were both burnt to a crisp. The beast apparently got what he wanted. The family was gone, but at least they all died, together.
