Radio and TV

HISTORY

Delta started its radio program in 1978. The idea came from Mr. Jerry Jones, who taught at the school for thirty-four years and retired in 2002. He started as the speech and drama teacher and ended up in mass media in charge of the radio and TV stations.

Early in his teaching career, a memorable moment occurred. In 1978 one morning at 2:30 am, 90.5 WWDS radio station went on the air for the first time. It was then that it all began.

Another tremendous achievement for Mr. Jones and his students came in 1994 when Delta first broadcast a TV show on the local public-access channel.

The radio TV class is now responsible for doing the TV announcements in the morning, for staffing the WWDS radio station during the day, and for announcing football and basketball home games for both the boys and the girls. The students in the class also do one project every semester featuring an academic department at Delta to inform those students thinking about moving to the school.

There are usually between sixty and seventy students every year that take advantage of the program. The classes are offered to students in good standing, who do well in school, and who are selected after an interview with the classroom teacher.  The class is now taught by Eric Ryan.
