American Studies Block course is a two-hour Honors class for juniors combining English 11 and American history. Taught by Mrs. Pat Ervin (history) and Mr. Kip Omstead (English), the course began 17 years ago and continues today.
"Everything in American Studies is focused upon
history and the American culture that has evolved," said Omstead. "It's
the thinking process that is different - we actually talk about how the
literary works, for example, affect history and the culture. ... In
short, we actually think about what things mean instead of just doing
the work." |
Mr. Kip Omstead, EnglishIt's different. Anyone who likes different should try it. |

Eaton History Project Involved Minnetrista Cultural Center and Ball State University. Students were assigned to gather historical information, including video clips from the 1930s and 1950s, of Eaton. The information was then compiled into a site accessible through Delta's Homepage. Involved conducting interviews and research, incorporating primary documents. "[The project was] very successful," according to Ervin, "and well-received by the community. We are especially proud of the fact that it integrated technology that is easily accessible. The movie clips from the 1930s and 1950s provide a valuable insight into the past." |
Mock Trial With science teacher Mr. Lance Brand, the class will re-enact the trial regarding Charles Lindbergh's baby kidnapping and murder (from the 1930s). Delta History Project Students began research in the first semester of 2007-08. Projected to be complete by May 2009. "In the end, we hope to not only have a website but also a publication," Ervin said. |
Mrs. Pat Ervin, HistoryWe use a thematic approach rather than a sequential approach to history. We also do a number of projects that require primary research. |
