Ideally, all medication should be given at home. It is recognized, however, that many students are able to attend school regularly because of the effectiveness of medication in the treatment of both chronic and temporary disabilities and illnesses.

The following guidelines will be used for dispensing any medication at school:

  1. Written instructions from the parent, which should include the name of the medication, the dosage, the time it is to be given, and the duration.
  2. All medication prescribed for an individual student should be kept in the original container with the pharmacy label intact.  All medication must be dispensed from the original container only.
  3. The student will report to the clinic during the time the medication is to be taken.  If the student fails to report to the clinic at the designated time for medication, it is the responsibility of the school nurse/personnel to ensure the medication is given.
  4. A medication log has been established to include date, time, name of medication, and signature of person giving the medication.
  5. All medications no longer used or needed are either returned according to Indiana law or destroyed in a manner which ensures that no other person can obtain possession of it.  According to Indiana Law IC 20-34-3-18:

A.                 Medication that is possessed by a school for administration during school hours or at school functions for a student may be released to:

(1)   The student’s parent; or

(2)   An individual who is:

(A)   At least eighteen (18) years of age; and

(B)   Designated in writing by the student’s parent to receive the medication

B.                 A school corporation may send home medication that is possessed by a school for administration during school hours or at school functions with a student if the student’s parent provides written permission for the student to receive the medication.

  1. At the time of registration, parents will complete an emergency information card that allows the school nurse to dispense certain stock medication, such as: Tylenol, Ibuprofen, antacids, cough drops.

A copy of the corporation’s medication policy will be sent home with each student at the beginning of the school year and given to each new student throughout the school year.
