Art

Art at Royerton Elementary is for Kindergarten
through 5th grade. Each
child is to bring basic art supplies to class including white Elmer's glue and Prang
watercolors.
Children in kindergarten gain experience in basic skills like tracing, cutting, gluing, and
using basic shapes to create pictures. Learning to follow directions is also important in
this beginning year of art. Work in painting and clay is begun at this level.
Children in 1st grade continue to improve their basic skills. They also start creating
their own ideas for their pictures. Work in painting, printmaking and clay continues.
Making good designs becomes more important.
Children in 2nd grade have developed better basic skills, so more advanced techniques are
begun like portrait drawing and stitchery. Students learn to research when drawing. Clay
sculpting is begun. Problem solving becomes more important.
Children in 3rd grade generally are more observant of details and so their drawing abilities
improve. Projects are of longer duration and complexity. Craftsmanship becomes important.
Some projects correspond with classroom study. If a project is not completed in class,
students finish projects on their own and are responsible for getting them in to be graded.
Children in 4th grade focus on design projects for the year, such as the yearbook cover
design contest, energy poster contest, and Artfest. Projects continue to be of longer
duration and complexity. Students continue to be responsible for getting projects finished
and turned in for the six weeks if additional time is needed.
Children in 5th grade are exposed to advanced techniques like shading, color theory,
drawing, painting, clay, lettering, papier mache, and perspective. Projects continue to be
of longer duration and complexity. Students continue to be responsible for getting projects
finished and turned in for the six weeks.
Mrs. Preston's art students have been involved with F.A.M.E. (Foundation of Art and Music in
(Education) since 1991. Each year the Executive Board in Ft. Wayne, Indiana selects the
organization's annual theme, focusing on a different part of the world and its culture.
World peace and interaction depends on understanding and appreciation of other cultures.
Our state legislature requires multicultural teaching as well. Two F.A.M.E. events Art
students participate in are: "Fusion" in the fall and "Festival "in the spring.
Here at school, student work is displayed at the annual
Pastries for Parents.
ART IS FOR LIFE !!!!!!!!!
