 MINUTES

Present:  Adam Williams, President; Trent Fox, Vice President; John Adams, Secretary; Alice Gillis, Member; Tyce Stebbins, Member; Darin Gullion, Assistant Superintendent; and Reece Mann, Superintendent

I.                   CALL TO ORDER

At 6:30 p.m. Board President, Adam Williams, called the meeting to order.

 

II.                PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

III.             AMEND AGENDA

A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by Trent Fox to amend the agenda, as presented.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

IV.              MINUTES

 A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by John Adams to accept the minutes of the business meeting and executive session held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 V.                 FINANCE

 A.     A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Trent Fox to accept the list of vouchers, as presented.  The motion was approved unanimously.

B.     Purchases over $7500:

A motion was made by Trent Fox and seconded by Alice Gillis to approve the following (item 1):

1.       American Electric Power         Construction                        $16,877.36

(Softball/concession)

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

VI.              COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE FLOOR

Christy McGuire, Royerton Elementary Assistant Principal, informed everyone 5th grader Jack Williamson was a Torch Bearer in the Bicentennial Relay a few weeks ago.  4th grader Tristan Parks participated in the naming of the Delaware County bison.  He was selected as the winner with the winning name Neolin and received an award.  He is in Mr. Parrott’s class and Mr. Parrott accompanied him and his family when he received the award.  Ms. McGuire stated it was a neat time for both of those students. 

Kelly Brown, Delta Middle School Principal, stated they have been doing the 212 Degree and Golden Eagle awards for the past 5 years.  She informed everyone a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student is chosen by the teachers.  They are honored on one wall and on the opposite wall one 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teacher the students choose is honored.  She stated at the end of each school year they announce the winners on the last day at the Honors Convo.  Today they did the presentation for last year’s students and it was a neat ceremony.  The 6th grade teacher honored now lives in Colorado and was unable to attend, but Ms. Brown had all her information and was able to present that to everyone.  7th grade teacher Kurt Griffis had his whole family there and 8th grade teacher Mr. Overholt was able to come over from the high school.  Ms. Brown informed everyone the 3 students honored were Jackson Ullom, Brady Hunt, and Natalie Talbot.  All of their families were able to attend and it was a neat ceremony.  She stated Fall Awards were this evening and Mr. Clark stepped up and ran those for her.  They were honoring around 200 students.  Ms. Brown did type up a thank you for the end of the awards and she appreciates Mr. Clark stepping in for her.  Ms. Brown reminded everyone their musical Honk Junior will be on December 2nd and 3rd.  She stated Ms. Camp is doing rehearsals 4 days week and 8th grade Challenge Art is painting the scene.

 Chris Conley, Delta High School Principal, informed everyone they had Cade Orchard as a Torch Bearer in the Bicentennial Relay and that was a neat thing.   He congratulated the boys’ soccer team for winning sectional for the first time since 2006.  He stated they now play the #1 team in the state and #7 in the nation, West Lafayette Harrison, Thursday night at Kokomo.  He informed everyone the boys’ tennis team played in the state finals for the 3rd time in 4 years.  They played the #1 team in the state, were swept, but played really well and all matches were competitive.  He stated on Saturday the boys and girls cross country teams both finished in the top 5 and will advance this coming Saturday.  Delta High School will be hosting volleyball sectionals starting Thursday night.  Delta doesn’t play until the second game on Saturday.  He stated we will be hosting New Castle in football sectionals Friday night which starts at 7:00.  Mr. Conley stated there are lots of things going on at Delta High School.  The staff is preparing for parent teacher conferences, which they are looking forward to.

 

VII.           NEW BUSINESS

 A.     Certified Staff

1.       A motion was made by Trent Fox and seconded by Alice Gillis to approve the recommendation to employ Ross Elwood as an Assistant Principal at Delta High School effective October 24, 2016, pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.  The motion was approved unanimously.

B.     Classified Staff

A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Tyce Stebbins to approve the following (item 1):

1.       Resignation of DeLinda Cooper, Food Service Cook at Royerton Elementary School, effective November 7, 2016.

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by Trent Fox to approve the following (item 2):

2.      Recommendation to employ Bailey Sulfridge as a Substitute Latchkey Aide effective October 19, 2016, pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

C.     Extra-Curricular

A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by Trent Fox to approve the following (items 1-3):

1.       Recommendation to employ Ryan Bickford as an 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Coach at Delta Middle School effective for the 2016-17 school year.

2.      Recommendation to employ Marc Foreman as an Assistant Wrestling Coach (split position) at Delta High School effective for the 2016-17 school year, pending successful completion of all pre-employment testing.

3.      Recommendation to employ David Locke as an Assistant Wrestling Coach (split position) at Delta High School effective for the 2016-17 school year.

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

D.    Conference Requests/Field Trips

A motion was made by Trent Fox and seconded by Alice Gillis to approve the following (items 1-4):

1.       Reece Mann requests permission to attend IASBO Fall Institute Certification Courses to be held from November 1, 2016 through November 2, 2016 at The Palms in Plainfield, IN.

2.      Kim Kemper requests permission to attend the Human Resources Seminar to be held on November 9, 2016 at The Palms in Plainfield, IN.

3.      Doug Wilder requests permission to attend the IUPUI Scholarship Breakfast to be held on November 11, 2016 at IU East in Richmond, IN.

4.      Reece Mann requests permission to attend the ISBA Fall Legal Workshop to be held on November 14, 2016 at Center Grove CSC Education Center in Greenwood, IN.

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

E.     Information and Proposals

1.       Superintendent

A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Tyce Stebbins to approve the following (items a-b):

a.      Recommendation to approve the Graduation Ceremony Policy (2nd Reading). 

b.      Recommendation to approve the Outside Information Policy (2nd Reading). 

 The motion was approved unanimously.

c.       A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by Trent Fox to approve permission to hire ECA positions as needed, prior to next board meeting.  The motion was approved unanimously.

d.      A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Trent Fox to approve the Professional Development Coordinator Evaluation Rubric.  The motion was approved unanimously.

e.      Mr. Mann informed the Board about the following fundraisers:

1.       Dawn Raleigh, Delta Troupers, requests permission to sell Ads starting October 17, 2016, as presented.  Proceeds go towards building materials, costuming, makeup, etc.

2.      Nancy Kunk and Nicole Terry, Delta FFA, request permission to sell Wick’s Pies from October 19, 2016 through November 15, 2016, as presented.  Proceeds go towards judging fees, contest fees, meals, conventions, etc.

3.      Amy Lewman and Diane Baird, DelCom Foundation, request permission to sell Pacer tickets for the December 19, 2016 game from October 24, 2016 through November 9, 2016, as presented. Proceeds go towards the DelCom Foundation-Student/Teacher Grants and Scholarships.

4.      Amanda Craw, DHS Dance Marathon, requests permission to have hat day on November 9, 2016, as presented.  Proceeds go towards Riley Children’s Hospital.

5.      Amanda Craw, DHS Dance Marathon, requests permission to sell apparel from November 14, 2016 through November 18, 2016, as presented.  Proceeds go towards Riley Children’s Hospital.

f.        Special Presentation- Athletic Project.

 

2.      Assistant Superintendent

A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by John Adams to approve the following (items 1-7):

a.      Use of Facilities:

1.       David Bratton, Delta 4th Grade Basketball, requests permission to use the Royerton Elementary Gymnasium from October 17, 2016 through January 31, 2017 to hold basketball practice, as presented.

2.      Sheri Reichert, Zumba with Sheri, requests permission to use the Delta Middle School Cafeteria and stage area on October 27, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to hold a Cancer Zumbathon, as presented.

3.      David Bratton, Delta Little League, Inc., requests permission to use the Delta High School Auxiliary Gym on December 17, 2016 and January 14, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to hold Little League open gym and workouts, as presented.

4.      Gary Schliessman, Delta Wrestling Club, requests permission to use the Delta High School Gymnasium on December 18, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to hold a Wrestling Tournament, as presented.

5.      Gary Schliessman, Delta Wrestling Club, requests permission to use the Delta High School Gymnasium on December 30, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to hold a Beginners Wrestling Tournament, as presented.

6.      Gary Schliessman, Delta Wrestling Club, requests permission to use the Delta High School Gymnasium and Auxiliary Gym on January 29, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to hold a Wrestling Tournament, as presented.

7.      David Bratton, Delta Little League Inc., requests permission to use the Royerton Elementary Cafeteria from February 7, 2017 through February 8, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to hold Little League Baseball Registration, as presented.

The motion was approved unanimously.

 

A motion was made by Tyce Stebbins and seconded by Trent Fox to approve the following (items b-c):

b.      Request for Delta Middle School to accept the donation of a Marco Kidney Activity Table, as presented. 

c.       Request for Delta High School to accept the donation of an office set from Newell Brands, as presented. 

The motion was approved unanimously.

IX.              BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS

Alice Gillis – Ms. Gillis congratulated the Torch Bearers who ran in the Bicentennial Relay.  She stated that is a great honor to be a part of and something they will remember forever.  She congratulated the middle school teachers and students who won awards and all athletic teams.  Ms. Gillis wished good luck to the cross country and football teams. 

John Adams – Mr. Adams concurred with his fellow board member.  He thanked everyone for the great job they are doing.  He stated it’s great when you sit up here and hear about the good things going on in the buildings and you don’t hear about many issues going on, that is a testament to who we have in leadership roles and support staff.  He gave a shout-out to the sports teams who have ended their seasons.  He knows the teams still involved will represent us well.  Mr. Adams welcomed Mr. Elwood and he’s looking forward to working with him.  He thanked Ms. Cooper for the time and effort she put in working for our schools and benefiting our kids.  He stated it seems a meeting doesn’t go by where we don’t have a donation from someone and we greatly appreciate that.

Tyce Stebbins – Mr. Stebbins concurred with his fellow board members.  He stated donations are one of those things this corporation gets a lot which is great.  He had someone from one of the neighboring schools make a comment about our donations and that is something to be proud of.  He thanked everyone involved in extra-curricular activities and working with our students.  He stated those people put in a lot of time and we have a lot of volunteer coaches and parents behind the scenes helping because it does take a lot of people to do those things.  Mr. Stebbins stated with everything going on in our school system, it does make a difference when people make comments about great things happening here.  He thanked everyone for their hard work and dedication.

Trent Fox – Mr. Fox thanked everyone for coming and stated it’s nice for administrators to present information at the meetings.  He thanked Mr. Pyle for the athletic field presentation and letting them know where they are at on the projects.  He thanked Ms. McGuire for her work on the Rubrics.  He knows that takes time and he appreciates it.  He thanked those giving donations.  They are huge and continue to allow us to do things with our kids that maybe we wouldn’t be able to.  He hopes Ms. Cooper enjoys her time and he’s sure leaving the kids was hard.  Mr. Fox stated parent teacher conferences are coming up.  He hopes they go well and we can see how we do with the middle and high school conferences for the first time.  He hopes there is good feedback and he wished good luck to the teams that are left in tournaments. 

Adam Williams – Mr. Williams thanked everyone and he appreciates what they do.  He commented the first 9 weeks flew by.  He stated Mr. Adams mentioned it’s been quiet in a good way and there is great pride to be taken in that.  He said it shows we are a community that has pride and is an amazing district.  He hopes everyone keeps doing great and works hard for the kids.  Mr. Williams appreciates what everyone does.

 

FUTURE MEETINGS

A.     A regular meeting for the Board of School Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.

A motion was made by John Adams and seconded by Trent Fox and Board President, Adam Williams, adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m.
