  1. COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE FLOOR

Amy Lewman, Assistant Principal at Royerton Elementary School, stated it’s been busy at Royerton.  Their blood drive was yesterday and they had more people sign up this year than in the past.  She stated they went through the Indiana Blood Center and Shawnda Swain, School Nurse, coordinated it for them.  Ms. Lewman stated it was very successful.  The Indiana Blood Center hasn’t provided the numbers on how many donors participated and total units received, but they should get that soon.  She stated tomorrow starts the second week of Parents to Lunch.  This year, since they have around 616 students, they decided to break it up and do one grade a day on Wednesdays and Fridays for three weeks.  She stated doing that has been a nice change of pace and parents aren’t feeling rushed.  They have had great attendance and a lot of parents are commenting on how nice it is to have the opportunity to eat with their children. Ms. Lewman informed everyone on Friday at 9:00 a.m. they are having a Veterans’ Program and everyone is invited.  She stated if anyone knows a Veteran that needs a place to go, send them to Royerton.  She thanked Student Council for helping facilitate that and making it a great program.

Chris Conley, Principal at Delta High School, informed everyone a few weeks ago they had the honor to induct 6 more students into National Honor Society.  He said the fall induction is much smaller than the spring induction, with last spring inducting 73 students.  Mr. Conley was honored to represent Delta High School and Delaware Community School Corporation at the Statehouse on Monday.  He stated he went down with Mr. Mann and Mr. Adams to receive an award for having more than 30% of students enrolled in Dual Credit classes for the 2015-16 school year.  He informed everyone our percentage was 47% for grades 9-12 so that means that almost half of our students, two years ago, were enrolled in Dual Credit classes.  He said that number will fluctuate a little because we lost students last year in the lower grade levels due to not having an Industrial Tech teacher.  Mr. Conley commented that’s a significant number and a reflection on the Board’s support of the University of Delta High School.  He stated we couldn’t do it without the School Board and Central Office’s support.

  1. LETTERS/NOTES

  1. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS

Adam Williams – Mr. Williams thanked everyone for coming.  He gave a special thanks to the exchange students and their host families and stated he enjoys hearing from them.  He appreciates what they bring to our school and said we are very fortunate to have so many from diverse locations.  He hopes we continue to have great kids brought into our corporation and to be able to expand their horizons and expand the understanding our students get by interacting with the exchange students.  He loves the program and thanked Ms. Huston for the many years she’s put in and for bringing the program to Delta.  He looks forward to many more years.  Mr. Williams congratulated the new inductees for the National Honor Society at the high school.  He thanked everyone who has given a donation, especially the specific ones highlighted tonight.  He stated the large donation from the Albany PTO is great and wonderful.  He appreciates the hard work and hours involved with organizing that.

Tyce Stebbins – Mr. Stebbins thanked the exchange students’ host families.  He stated the exchange students may not understand the Board relationship and structure of our school system, but he appreciates them taking time out of their evening to come say hello and answer a few questions.  He stated our community defines what a community is.  He’s sure everyone knows about Christian and what that young man is going through.  He stated it’s neat when our community gets behind people and helps in so many different ways and that’s a definition of who we are and how we react to things.  He wishes the family the best as they go through this tough time.  Mr. Stebbins would like the administrators to pass along his thanks to the staff for being good about having patience and understanding.  We never know what’s going on at home with someone’s sibling, grandparent, dog, or whatever is special in their life.  He thinks our staff has always been great about this.  He stated the donations are always fun to accept and he enjoys seeing where they come from and what they are for.  He commented the 4-H kids always do an excellent job of sending thank you cards.  He thinks other groups can benefit from doing that as well.  Mr. Stebbins doesn’t think we’ve ever had a time where the 4-H kids haven’t sent thank you cards and stated it’s always neat to see them.

Alice Gillis – Ms. Gillis thanked Ms. Huston for bringing the exchange students and taking care of them all these years.  She thinks it’s a great addition to our schools and they can learn a lot.  She thanked Ms. Cross for the presentation.  She stated it sounded like an interesting and helpful seminar.  She welcomes the Veterans’ Programs on Friday and is glad our schools take the time to do that.  She stated we really need to do that even if we think it’s something we shouldn’t do because it’s a great thing for our community.  Ms. Gillis congratulated the 6 students inducted into the National Honor Society at the high school.  She congratulated Mr. Conley and everyone involved with Dual Credit classes.  She knows it takes a lot of planning and stated it was nice we were recognized at the Statehouse.  Ms. Gillis doesn’t know Christian’s family, but she wishes them the best.  She can’t imagine having daily wondering and worry.  She stated the last report she saw sounded good.  She doesn’t know if we can rejoice too much, but it’s great to hear.

John Adams – Mr. Adams thanked the middle school for doing the bulletin board for their musical on December 1st and 2nd at 6:00 p.m. He informed everyone Swinging Sounds is putting on “The Little Mermaid”.  If you can go, he’s sure they’d love the support.  He thanked Ms. Huston for bringing the exchange students in so they can have fun and joke around with them.  He said, all kidding aside, the years he’s gotten to know a few of the exchange students, it seems they enjoy coming back to our community.  He stated that’s a testament to the people they’ve met, the host families, the kids, and administrators who made them feel comfortable enough to come back and spend time in our community.  Some of them have come back and have or will be attending a college in the area or have brought their own families back to visit and that’s a neat thing.  He thanked Ms. Huston for all the years she’s been able to do the program.  Mr. Adams informed Ms. Cross he thinks we’ve come to expect we aren’t going to have a thumbs up all the time with food service.  He thanked her and her staff for doing a good job because he knows it’s not an easy thing.  He stated it takes a lot of time and effort and thanked her staff for a job well done.  He stated it was neat to be with Mr. Mann and Mr. Conley at the Statehouse.  He didn’t ask a lot of questions on the way down because he didn’t have any idea how many schools were there, but there were 130 schools that got recognized.  He stated that’s a tremendous job by a lot of school corporations.  He stated we are very fortunate that Delta High School was recognized, but it was also nice to see a lot of other schools around the state taking advantage of the money that’s saved by taking Dual Credit classes.  He stated $53 million has been saved by families in the state of Indiana for taking advantage of Dual Credits.  Mr. Adams stated the administrative salaries were very important and he’s glad they got to do it.  Mr. Adams thanked the administrators for running our buildings, taking care of our kids, and for the job they are doing. He stated it’s well deserved.

Trent Fox – Mr. Fox thanked everyone for coming.  He appreciates it and stated it’s neat for people to see what we do and how we do it.  He greatly appreciates Ms. Huston for her years of service to the exchange student program.  He informed her the exchange students are going to miss her leadership, but he’s sure they will be in good hands.  He knows Ms. Huston is very particular about finding someone to take her spot.  He congratulated Ms. Cross for food service passing inspections.  He stated she only has a few more buildings to go and he hopes those will go just as well as the others.  He asked Ms. Cross to let her staff know he appreciates the effort that goes into making that happen.  He stated it makes us look good as a school corporation and he appreciates it.  He stated donations are always a big thing, especially $9,000.00.  That’s a big number, especially from PTO and it’s greatly appreciated.  He’s sure Albany will use it in a way that’s good for the community.  Mr. Fox likes to go to the high school National Honor Society induction.  He stated it’s neat to see the kids get honored for their achievements.  He agrees with Mr. Conley that the fall one is much shorter and quicker than the spring one, but that’s a testament to what we do at our school corporation and how our kids are growing and what our staff is doing.  He appreciates the effort that goes into that and for helping our kids achieve high achieving goals.
