Chris Conley, Principal at Delta High School, stated in addition to Jacob Gray’s outstanding performance on Saturday, the boys’ swim team won their third sectional in a row.  Out of 11 events, we won 6.  He informed everyone Chandler Tucker was the winner in the 500 free and Jared Hunt won the 100 breast stroke.  Both of them are in the 200 and 400 free relays and will be going on to finals this Friday night.  He stated Andrew Torres broke the record in the 50 and 100 free preliminaries on Thursday night then broke both records again on Saturday.  This will be his third trip to the state finals.  Most of the young men on the relay team have gone the last two years to the state finals. Mr. Conley stated ISTEP +10 begins for sophomores next Monday.  They will have about three days of testing in English, two days of math and a day of science.  This is now the graduation qualifying exam for sophomores.  He stated they will send reminders home so sophomores and parents know how important these tests are.

Kelly Brown, Principal at Delta Middle School, stated ISTEP starts next week.  Ms. Lewman has worked hard on that and Ms. Brown really appreciates all her efforts.  She stated it’s been a team effort with teachers having a voice in scheduling to try and boost scores this year.  She informed everyone Mr. Clark had a neat idea to recognize coaches at their awards banquet.  They honored Mr. Thompson, Ms. Whittington, and Mr. Van Pelt for all of their years of service at Delta Middle School.  She stated combined, those three have dedicated 58 seasons to the middle school.  They provided them with a plaque and their families attended.  She stated it was pretty neat and felt it was a big deal to all three of them.  She informed everyone this week they have county wrestling at Cowan and will host the county 6th grade girls’ basketball game tonight, Thursday, and Saturday morning.  Ms. Brown informed everyone Chromebooks were delivered and that was pretty neat.

  8. LETTERS/NOTES

  9. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS

Adam Williams – Mr. Williams thanked everyone for coming and all of those who shared information tonight.  He stated it is great and he appreciates it.  He commented he likes the PowerPoints and thanked who came up with the idea.  He thinks it’s good for people who come to the meeting to follow along.  He congratulated Jacob Gray on his outstanding achievement, not just as an athlete, but as a good kid representing Delta well.  He stated win or lose, the goal is to help be a part of the process of teaching kids to become great citizens.  He congratulated those qualifying for swim finals and wished them well.  He appreciates how well Delta is represented by our student athletes.  Mr. Williams thanked Ms. Brown for finding new ways to get kids to absorb and think different ways for testing.  He stated digging into that information really pays off and it may take cycles, but analyzing it the way she did is wonderful for a school our size and everyone who cares about our students.  He appreciates her and her team’s effort.

Tyce Stebbins – Mr. Stebbins encouraged the students and families to do their part for ISTEP testing because it’s really important.  He thanked the staff for their efforts in trying to identify different groups that need support and helping them improve.  He wished good luck to the swim team.  He stated he doesn’t say a lot in regards to sports because people assume he’s a big sports fan, but it is ironic when people talk about needing to start talking to kids about effort and not their intelligence and how we need to push these things. He stated that’s what sports has been doing for 30-40 years.  It’s ironic we are in 2017 and are finally starting to realize the importance of establishing kids confidence and their ability to look at something and fail then come back tomorrow with a mindset they are going to accomplish a goal.  Mr. Stebbins stated they may not accomplish a goal tomorrow, but they are working towards a goal and that’s what it’s about.  It’s not about getting an A or winning state, although those things are really nice, it’s about where you are at today and where you’re going to be tomorrow.

Alice Gillis – Ms. Gillis congratulated Jacob Gray on a job well done at State.  She feels strongly that we try to recognize athletes, but she also thinks it’s important to recognize academics as well.  She wished good luck to the athletes finishing at State.  She thanked Ms. Brown for the presentation and thinks the effort they’ve put into improving the testing situation and looking outside the box to see what’s possible is great.  She thanked Dr. Larrabee and Mr. Persinger for the presentation on the trykes and going above and beyond to get these for our students.  Ms. Gillis appreciates the hard work the counselors put in for applying for the grants and she’s sure it will be put to great use.  She informed everyone we had several students at the Ball State Science Fair Saturday with Jackson Boyle from the high school and Shelby Gillis from the middle school going on to the State Science Fair.

John Adams – Mr. Adams apologized for being a little late.  He stated with his line of business in the insurance world, he always tries to make sure he’s on time, but doctors’ offices don’t seem to run on the same time we expect.  He congratulated Jacob Gray and stated he wasn’t able to be down there, but he watched it on TV.  He was excited and a little worried the last 30 seconds, but Jacob pulled it off.  Mr. Adams commends everyone who helped Jacob get the state win.  He stated it’s a privilege to sit up here and get to recognize the good things going on in our schools.  It’s not just the Friday and Saturday night ball games, it’s what’s going on in our schools each and every day.  He stated it starts from the time our bus drivers pick them up until the time our kids get home, whether it’s after practice, an event or ensemble they performed in.  Mr. Adams stated he’s a little perplexed with RAC Trykes and why it took them four years to find us.  He truly believes this is a good opportunity and something our community can embrace.  He stated we’ve seen this community pull around many different things with donating time and money.  The more we can share what it is we are trying to do, whether it be fundraising or sending things out from a Board level, this is something we can get behind and help the kids in our community.  He really wishes we had this four years ago because we may have had some kids who could have used that, but we will take what we can get and move forward with it.  Mr. Adams is glad Dr. Larrabee was able to get this to our level and support this effort.

Trent Fox – Mr. Fox thanked everyone for being here and those who presented.  He stated everyone talked and some of them were trying to get out of here quickly and that’s the reason the meeting was moved to 5:00.  He wished good luck to the swim team in their quest at the state meet.  He wished good luck with ISTEP for all the schools in the next few weeks.  He stated it’s a big test and hopefully our students can thrive this time around and will be successful.
